Site Information
Bursledon, located in the Borough of Eastleigh in Southampton, England, sits on the River Hamble. Nearby is Hamble-le-Rice, renowned worldwide as the ‘Heart of British Yachting’ due to the popularity of the BA Yacht Club. During World War II, Bursledon served as an aircraft training centre. The site is close to a railway station, marina, and dockyards.
Located just 15 miles from Portsmouth, Bursledon is easily accessible and only 15 minutes by car from BAA Southampton International Airport, which offers service to 43 international destinations and serves nearly 2 million passengers annually. The airport provides employment for 1,300 people in the local area.
Bursledon Railway Station, situated on the West Coastway Line, provides rail links to Southampton city centre every 10 minutes and London Waterloo every 20 minutes, serving the surrounding towns.
Southampton is a city steeped in history, boasting the home port of some of the world’s finest ocean liners and cruise ships. It is also one of the busiest cargo docks in Britain.
Site Planning Update
The Eastleigh Borough Local Plan has experienced significant delays and has not met its housing delivery targets, resulting in the Planning Inspector allowing its adoption despite unresolved issues. Despite Eastleigh’s commitment to housing delivery, the numbers have decreased in recent years, particularly in affordable housing.
An unresolved issue pertains to the growth into the Strategic Gap, which affects the Bursledon site and consequently results in a shortfall in housing delivery as per the current plan. Thus, the Planning Inspector mandates an update to the Plan, which must be carried out to address the outstanding issues including growth into the Strategic Gap, and fulfill the housing delivery shortfall.
An update to the plan has been ordered to occur by April 2023, which will entail the release of additional development sites, including those located within the strategic gap, to address the housing shortfall. We will keep track of the schedule for the update and collaborate with Eastleigh on how to optimally utilize growth within the gap once the update is initiated.
